Today, I want to talk about purpose. 

 

오늘은 목적에 대해 말하고자 합니다.

The challenge for our generation is to create a world where everyone has a sense of purpose.

 

우리 세대가 해결해야 할 과제는 모든 사람이 목적의식을 가지고  세상을 만드는 것입니다.

 

One of my favorite stories is 

 

내가 가장 좋아하는 이야기 중 하나는

 

when JFK went to go visit the NASA Space Center

JFK가 NASA 우주센터를 방문했을 때

 

and he saw a janitor holding a broom

그는 청소부가 빗자루를 들고 있는 것을 보았다.

 

and he asked him what he was doing in

그리고 그는 그에게 무엇을 하고 있느냐고 물었다.

 

the janitor replied,

mr. President, I'm helping put a man on the moon.

그 청소부는 이렇게 대답했습니다 “ 대통령님, 저는 달에 사람을 보내는걸 돕고 있습니다.” 라고

 

 

Purpose is that feeling that you are a part of something bigger than yourself,

목적이란 자기 자신보다 더 큰 무언가의 일부라고 느끼는 것 입니다.

 

that you are needed.

 

And then you have something better ahead to work for

 

여러분들은 필요한 존재이며, 

 

앞으로 더 나은일을 할수 있을것이란 기대를 가지게 됩니다.

 

 purpose is what create true, happiness.

 

목적 이란 진정한 행복을 만들어 내는것 입니다.

 

And today, I want to talk about three ways

 

that we can create a world where everyone has a sense of purpose

 

오늘 저는 우리가 목적의식을 가지고 세상을 만들어갈수 있는 3가지 방법에 대해서.

 

이야기 해볼까 합니다.

The first, let's take on big meaningful projects.

 

첫번째로는, 큰 의미있는 프로젝트를 맏아보는것 입니다. 

 

 

Our generation is going to have to deal with tens of millions of jobs.

 

Replaced by automation like self-driving, cars and trucks,

 

우리 세대는 수천만 개의 일자리가.

자율주행, 자동차 나 트럭과 같은 자동화로 대체될것에

직면해 있습니다..

 

but we have the potential to do so much more than that.

하지만 우린 그 이상을 할 수 있는 잠재력을 가지고 있습니다.

 

Every generation has its defining Works.

 

모든 세대는 그들을 정의내릴만한 업적을 가지고 있습니다.

 

More than 300,000 people work to put that man on the moon including that janitor.

30만 명이 넘는 사람들이 우주인을 달에 보내기 위해 일합니다. 청소부까지 포함해서요.

 

 

millions of volunteers immunize children around the world against polio

수백만 명의 자원봉사자들이 소아마비 예방 접종을 전 세계 어린이들에게 하고 있습니다.

 

and millions of more people build the Hoover Dam, and other great projects.

수백만 명이 넘는 사람들이 후버 댐과 거대한 프로젝트들을 건설합니다. 

 

And now it's Our Generations turn to do great things.

이제는 우리세대가 멋진일들을 해내야할 차례입니다.

 

Now, I know, maybe you're thinking,

 

I don't know how to build a dam.

 

How do I get a million people involved in anything?

 

저는 여러분들이 무슨생각을 하는지 알고 있습니다.

나는 댐을 어떻게 만드는지 모르는데? 라거나

내가 어떻게 수백만명을 참여하게 만들수 있겠어? 

라고 말이죠.

Well. Let me tell you a secret.

제가 비밀 한가지를 알려드리겠습니다.

 

No one does when they begin.

그 누구도 시작부터 해내는 사람은 없습니다.

 

 

Ideas don't come out, fully formed,

아이디어는 완성된 상태로 나타나지 않습니다.

 

they only become clear as you work on them.

아이디어는 여려분이 그것들을 실행할때에만 명확해집니다.

You just have to get started.

그냥 시작만 하면 됩니다.

 

Movies in pop culture just get this all wrong.

대중문화의 영화들은 이 모든것을 잘못 표현하고 있습니다.

 

The idea of a single Eureka moment Is a dangerous lie.

단 한번에 유레카처럼 아이디어가 떠오르는 것들은 위험한 거짓말 입니다.

 

It makes us feel inadequate.

이건 우리를 뭔가 부족함이 느껴지게 만듭니다.

 

Because we feel like we haven't had ours yet.

왜냐하면 우리가 아이디어를 가지지 못한것 처럼 느껴지게 만들기 때문입니다.

 

 And it prevents people with seeds of good ideas from ever getting started in the first place.

그리고 이것은 좋은 아이디어의 씨앗을 가진 사람들이 처음부터 무언가 시작하는 것을 막아서게 됩니다.

In our society,

 

 

we often don't take on big things because we're so afraid of making mistakes

우리 사회에서, 우리는 실수를 할까봐 큰 일을 맡지 않는 경우가 많이 있습니다..

 

that we ignore all the things wrong today If we do nothing.

우리가 아무것도 하지 않는다면, 오늘날 잘못되어있는 모든것들을 외면하게 될것입니다.

 

The reality is anything we do today Is going to have some issues in the future.

현실 은, 오늘 우리가 하는 모든 일들이 미래에 문제가 될수도있다 라는 점입니다.

 

But that can't stop us from getting started.

그렇다고 우리가 시작하는것을 막을수는 없습니다.

 

So what are we waiting for?

그렇다면 무엇을 망설이시나요?

 

It is time for our generation defining great works.

이제는 우리세대를 대표할 멋진 일을 해야할 때입니다.

 

How about stopping climate change before we destroy the planet?

우리가 지구를 망가뜨리기 전에 기후변화를 막는건 어떤가요?

 

and getting millions of people involved manufacturing  and installing solar panels.

그리고 수백만의 사람들이 모여서 태양전지판을 만들고 설치해 보는건 어떨까요?

 

How about curing all diseases and getting people involved

 

by asking volunteers to share their genomes?

자원 봉사자들을 모아서 그들의 유전자 정보들을 수집해 모든 종류의 질병들을 치료해보는건 어떨까요?

These achievements are all within our reach.

이 모든 성과는 우리가 할수있는 범위 내에 있습니다.

 

Let's do them all in a way that gives everyone in our society a role.

우리사회에 있는 모든 사람들에게 각자의 역할을 주는 방식으로 이것들을 해봅시다

Let's do big things, not just to create progress but to create purpose.

큰 일들을 해봅시다, 발전을 위해서가 아니라, 목적을 만들어내기 위해서.

The second is redefining our idea of equality 

so everyone has the freedom to pursue their purpose.

 

두 번째는 평등에 대한 우리의 생각을 재정의 하는것 입니다.

그래서 모든 사람들이 자신의 목적을 추구할 자유를 가질수 있게 하는것이죠.

 

 

Many of our parents had stable jobs throughout their careers,

많은 우리의 부모님들은 평생 안정적인 직업을 가졌었습니다.

 

but in our generation, we're all a little entrepreneurial.

하지만 우리 세대는, 모두가 작은 기업가 입니다.

 

Whether we're starting our own projects or finding our role in  another one

스스로가 사업을 시작하거나, 다른사업에 역활을 맏기도 하죠.

and you know, that's great

 

because our culture of Entrepreneurship is how we create so much progress.

그건 멋진 일입니다. 왜냐하면 그런 우리의 기업가정신 문화가 바로  많은 발전을 만드러낸 방식이기 때문입니다

 

An entrepreneurial culture thrives when it is easy to try lots of new ideas. 

기업가 문화는 많은 새로운 아이디어를 시도하기 쉬울때 번창합니다.

 

Facebook wasn't the first thing I built.

페이스북은 제가 만드것중 첫번째는 아니었습니다.

 

 

I also built chat systems and games, study tools, and music players. And I'm not alone,

 

저는 채팅프로그램, 게임, 공부도구들 그리고 음악재생 플레이어도 만들었었죠. 그리고 그렇게 한사람은 저뿐만이 아니었습니다.

 

JK Rowling got rejected 12 times before she finally wrote and published Harry Potter.

JK Rowling 은 해리포터 를 쓰고 출판하기 전까지 12번을 거절당했습니다.

 

The greatest successes come from having the freedom to fail.

가장 큰 성공은 실패의 자유를 누리는 데서 옵니다.

 

When you don't have the freedom. 

 

To take your idea and turn it into a historic Enterprise.

 

We all lose 

 

이런 자유를 얻지 못한때에는, 여러분의 아이디어를 받아들여 역사적 기업으로 만드는

이 모든것을 잃게 됩니다.

And let's face it,

 

there is something wrong with our system.

우리 시스템에 문제가 있다는것을 

I know a lot of entrepreneurs

 

저는 많은 기업가들을 알고 있습니다.

 

I don't know a single person who gave up on starting a business because they were worried. They might not make enough money.

 

그리고 돈을 많이 벌지 못할것을 걱정해서 사업 시작을 포기하는 사람은 한명도 본적이 없습니다.

 

But I know too many people who haven't had the chance to pursue their dreams

because they didn't have a cushion to fall back on if they failed.

 

하지만  뒤로 넘어질때 받쳐줄 쿠션이 없기때문에, 꿈을 이룰수 있는 기회를 놓치는 사람들을 수없이 많이 봤습니다.

Every generation expands. It's definition of equality,

모든 세대는 평등에 대한 정의를 확장시킵니다.

 

 

 

We should explore ideas like Universal basic income to make sure that everyone has a cushion to try new ideas.

우리는 모든 사람들이 새로운 아이디어를 시도할 수 있는 쿠션을 가질 수 있도록 보편적 기본소득과 같은 아이디어를 탐구해야 합니다.

And we're all going to make mistakes.

 

우리 모두는 실수를 하게됩니다.

 

So we need a society that is less focused on locking us up and stigmatizing us when we do.

그래서 우리가 실수할때 우리를 가두고 낙인찍는것에 덜 집중하는 사회가 필요합니다.

we need a society that is more focused on providing continuous education through our lives

우리의 삶에 지속적인 교육을 제공하는데 더 집중하는 사회가 필요합니다. 

We can all make time to give someone a hand.

우리 모두 시간을 내서 누군가에게 도움을 줄 수 있습니다

 

Let's give everyone the freedom to pursue their purpose.

모든 사람에게 자신의 목적을 추구할 자유를 줘봅시다

 

Not just because it's the right thing to do,

 

but because when more people can turn their dreams

 

into something great, we are all better for it.

 

그것이 옳은 일이기 때문만이 아니라, 더 많은 사람들이 그들의 꿈을 실현시킬수 있기때문에 그렇습니다.

Purpose doesn't only come from work.

목적 이라는것은 업무를 통해서만 얻을수 있는것이 아닙니다.

 

The third way, we can create a sense of purpose

 

for everyone is by building community. 

 

우리가 모든 사람에게 목적 의식을 심어줄 수 있는 세 번째 방법은 공동체를 만드는 것입니다.

 

In a recent survey of Millennials around the world

 

asking what most defines our identity,

 

최근 전 세계 밀레니얼 세대를 대상으로 한 설문조사에서

 

무엇이 우리의 정체성을 정의하는지 물어보았습니다.

 

the most popular answer wasn't nationality, ethnicity or religion.

가장 인기 있는 대답은 국적, 민족성, 종교 같은 단어가 아니었습니다..

It was “citizen of the world”. That's a big deal.

그 대답은 바로 “세계의 시민” 이었습니다. 이것은 엄청난 일입니다.

 

Every generation expands the circle of people we consider one of us.

모든 세대는 “우리들 중 하나” 라는 개념으로 영역을 확장 합니다.

 

Our generation now includes the whole world

우리세대는 전세계를 하나로 포함하고 있습니다.

We get that our greatest opportunities are now global.

우리의 엄청난 기회가 이제는 전세계를 대상으로 한다는것을 알게 되었습니다.

 

We can be the generation that ends poverty,that ends disease.

우리는 가난을 끝내고 질병을 없애는 세대가 될수 있습니다.

 

we get that our greatest challenges need global responses too. 

 우리의 가장 큰 도전도 세계적인 대응이 필요하다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

 

no country can fight climate change alone or prevent pandemics

어떤 나라도 홀로 기후 변화와 싸우거나 전염병을 예방할 수 없습니다.

 

progress now requires coming together not just as cities or nations but also as a global community,

이제 진보는 도시나 국가로서뿐만 아니라 전세계가 함께 할 것을 요구합니다.

 

But we live in an unstable time.

하지만 우리는 불안정한 시대에 살고 있습니다

 

There are people left behind by globalization across the whole world.

전 세계에는 세계화속에서도 뒤져진 사람들이 있습니다..

the purpose and stability in our own lives that we can start to open up and care about everyone else

우리 삶의 목적과 안정성은 우리가 다른사람들에게 마음을 열고 관심을 가지는것 입니다. 

 

And the best way to do that is to start building local communities right now.

그것을 할수 있는 가장 좋은 방법은 바로 지역사회를 건설하는것 입니다.

 

Change starts local.

변화는 지역사회에서 시작됩니다.

Even Global change starts small people Like Us.

심지어 전세계 적인 변화도 우리같이 작은 사람들 부터 시작됩니다.

 

 In our generation,

 

the struggle of whether we connect more whether we achieve our biggest opportunities comes down to this.

 

우리가 가장 큰 기회를 얻을 수 있을지에 대한 고군분투는 결국 이것으로 귀결됩니다.

 

Your ability to build communities and create a world where every single person has

 

a sense of purpose.

 

지역사회를 만들고 모든 사람이 목적의식을 가질수 있는 그 세상을 만들 수 있는 것이 바로 여러분들의 능력입니다.
